What we excavate for
Residential and light commercial excavation in the township usually falls into a few categories:
- Footings and foundations for additions, garages and sunrooms
- Base excavation for driveways, patios and slabs
- Sewer, water and drainage trenching
- Inground pool removal and backfill
- Regrading yards so water moves away from the house
- Removing buried debris, old concrete and unsuitable fill
Start by reading the soil
South Jersey soils vary from sand to clay within short distances. Sand digs quickly but won't stand on a tall vertical face. Clay holds a wall better but drains poorly and becomes slick when wet. We look at what each excavation exposes and adjust trench support, backfill material and compaction to suit it.
Utilities located before we dig
Public utilities are marked before any excavation. Gloucester Township's sewer is run by the township Sewer Utilities Department, and water comes from Aqua New Jersey or New Jersey American Water depending on address. We also locate private lines — irrigation, low-voltage lighting, gas to grills and pool heaters, buried downspout pipes — that public marking won't show.
Footings for additions
A new addition is only as stable as the soil under its footings. We excavate to undisturbed bearing soil, remove loose fill and organic material rather than building on it, and have the footing excavation inspected before concrete is placed. Backfill around the foundation is compacted in lifts.
Grading for drainage
Many wet yards and damp basements are solved with earthwork: cutting and filling so the ground falls away from the house and toward a legal outlet. We grade with instruments, compact fill, and finish with topsoil ready for seed or sod.
Utility trenching
For sewer and water repair or replacement, we excavate to the line, set new pipe on proper bedding at correct grade, and backfill in compacted lifts so the trench doesn't sink.
Site prep for concrete
A driveway or patio lasts only as long as the ground beneath it. We excavate below soft topsoil, remove weak spots and install a compacted stone base before concrete goes down.
Pool removal and backfill
Removing an inground pool is mostly excavation: breaking out or removing the shell, filling the hole with suitable material in compacted lifts, and grading the area to drain. Proper compaction is what lets you use that part of the yard afterward.
Trench safety
Deeper excavations are sloped, benched or shored to suit the soil and depth. Spoil is kept back from the edge, and nobody works in an unsupported trench.
Water in the excavation
Wet-weather digs and lower ground can bring water into a trench. We plan for pumps where needed so footings and pipe are set in a firm, dry bottom.
Equipment sized to the site
We choose machines that fit the access, protect lawns and driveways with mats where needed, and keep the street clean. Tight spots get compact equipment or hand work.
Spoil and fill
Suitable excavated soil can be reused for grading. Clay that won't compact well, debris and organic material are hauled away, and proper fill is brought in where structural support matters.
Permits and inspection
Footing excavations are inspected before concrete, and work in the right-of-way needs township approval. We coordinate the inspections for our part of the project.
Backfill in compacted lifts
The difference between ground that stays level and ground that sinks is how it was backfilled. We place fill in layers and compact each one.
A typical residential dig, start to finish
Most residential projects follow a predictable order: utilities marked, private lines located, mats laid on the access route, topsoil stripped and saved, excavation to depth, inspection where required, the structural or utility work itself, backfill in compacted lifts, regrading and topsoil. We'll walk you through that order before we start so you know what each day looks like.
Wet weather and backfill
Fill that's too wet won't compact, and ground backfilled wet will settle later. When rain soaks a site, we pause backfilling until the material is workable or bring in drier fill. It can add a day, and it's the difference between a lawn that stays level and one that sinks.
Removing buried surprises
Older yards often hide things: abandoned oil tank lines, old concrete footings from sheds long gone, buried debris from past renovations, or forgotten dry wells. When an excavation turns one up, we stop, identify it, and talk with you about removing it properly before going on. Building over buried debris is how settlement problems start.
Emergency excavation
When a sewer line fails, excavation can't wait. Our crews respond around the clock.

We locate private lines like irrigation, lighting and gas to grills, which public marking doesn't cover.
Often. Shaping the ground to fall away from the house and toward a legal outlet solves many drainage problems.
Because it was pushed in without compaction. We backfill in compacted layers.
