Borough or township first
Berlin is really two municipalities: Berlin Borough and Berlin Township. Many people say 'Berlin' for both, but the difference matters for excavation. Sewer is handled by either the borough or the township sewer department depending on where the property sits, with wastewater treated by the Camden County MUA. Permits and right-of-way approvals also come from whichever municipality you're in.
Before we scope a dig, we confirm the municipality so the right office reviews and inspects the work.
Utilities we coordinate with
Water is supplied by the Borough of Berlin Water Department. Sewer lateral connections are inspected by the borough or township sewer department that serves the address. We handle that coordination so you don't have to figure out which office to call.
Trenching for service lines
For a failed sewer lateral or water service, we camera the line where possible, size the trench to the problem, set new pipe on a bedding at steady grade and backfill in compacted layers. A trench backfilled in one dump will settle; one built up in lifts won't.
Locating before digging
We request a utility markout for every job and hand-expose marked lines near the excavation. Private lines the markout doesn't cover — irrigation, yard lighting, lines to sheds — we ask about up front.
Footings and foundations
For additions, garages and sunrooms, footings go below frost depth to undisturbed bearing soil. Soft fill in the footprint is removed rather than built on, and the excavation is inspected before concrete.
Grading for drainage
When a yard holds water or runoff heads toward the house, we take elevations, identify a legal outlet and reshape the ground for a continuous fall away from the foundation. Water is never pushed onto a neighbor's property.
What we excavate for
Berlin jobs we regularly take on:
- Sewer lateral and water service trenching
- Footings for additions, garages and sunrooms
- Regrading and swale work
- Pool, patio and slab removal with compacted fill
- Base excavation for driveways and walks
Removal and backfill
When a pool, slab or old structure comes out, debris is hauled off site. The opening is filled in compacted layers with suitable material and graded so it drains and doesn't sink.
Driveway and patio base prep
We excavate below topsoil and any soft material, then install and compact a stone base so the new concrete has uniform support.
Soil on site
Ground conditions vary from lot to lot, so we evaluate soil as it comes out. Material that won't compact well is replaced with suitable fill in structural areas.
Water in the excavation
If a dig takes on water from rain or groundwater, we pump it out and make sure the bottom is firm before pipe or concrete goes in.
Trench safety
Trenches deep enough to be a hazard are sloped, benched or shored for the soil, with spoil kept back and the site protected when left open.
Permits
We pull permits from the correct municipality, schedule inspections and handle any right-of-way approvals for work reaching the street.
Restoration
After backfill, we fine-grade, topsoil and repair disturbed walks or paving, leaving the yard ready for seed.
