When you need it — and when you don't.
When you need this
- Municipal sewer has been extended to a street that previously only had septic-served properties, and connection is now available or required.

When this is the wrong fix

How it's done.
Conversion starts with confirming the sewer main's location, depth, and available capacity near the property, and identifying the connection point and any municipal tap requirements. A new sewer lateral is trenched from the house to the main connection point, following the same general practice as any lateral installation — SDR-35 PVC pipe at a minimum 1/4 inch per foot fall, bedded and haunched in clean stone, with trench shoring once depth passes the OSHA five-foot threshold. Once the new lateral is tied in and tested, the plumbing that previously fed the septic tank is redirected to the new sewer lateral, and the septic tank is disconnected from the household system. The old tank then must be properly decommissioned, and there are two general approaches: pump-out and crush-and-fill, where the tank is fully pumped of remaining contents, the lid or top is broken in to eliminate a void space, and the tank is backfilled in place with clean fill or stone; or full tank removal, where the emptied tank is excavated out entirely and hauled away, then the resulting excavation is backfilled and compacted. Full removal eliminates any future risk of a buried void collapsing under a driveway or structure, while crush-and-fill is often preferred where the tank sits somewhere excavation would be highly disruptive, such as under an existing patio or close to a foundation. Either method requires the tank be completely pumped by a licensed septic hauler before any breaking or excavation work begins.
