CCMUA Sewer Connection Fee: 2026 Guide
Last updated
If your Camden County home is switching from a septic system to public sewer, or you are building on a lot that will connect to the CCMUA system, this one-time county fee is part of the cost. Here is what it covers, how it is calculated, and what else to budget for.
What is an EDU?
EDU stands for Equivalent Dwelling Unit. It is the unit CCMUA uses to measure a property's expected sewer flow and charge connection fees. One single-family home equals one EDU, so a typical homeowner pays the fee once: $6,618.
Commercial buildings, multi-unit residential properties, and other non-single-family uses are assigned a number of EDUs from CCMUA's rate schedule. If your property is anything other than a single home, confirm the EDU count with CCMUA before budgeting, then multiply it by the per-EDU fee.
Fee history
| Effective | Fee per EDU |
|---|---|
| April 2023 | $6,480 |
| April 2024 | $6,545 |
| April 2026 | $6,618 |
How to calculate your fee
The math is simple: multiply your property's EDU count by the current per-EDU fee. Using the rate in effect since April 21, 2026:
- 1 EDU × $6,618 = $6,618 (a typical single-family home)
- 2 EDUs × $6,618 = $13,236
- 4 EDUs × $6,618 = $26,472
Because the rate resets every spring, the fee you pay is the one in effect when you pay it, not when you first hear about the project. If your connection is likely to slip past April, confirm the rate with CCMUA again before you finalize your budget.
What else you'll pay
The CCMUA fee is only one piece of a sewer connection. Most homeowners also pay:
- A municipal connection fee, which varies by town and is charged separately from the CCMUA fee.
- Sewer lateral installation: the pipe from your house to the street connection. Cost depends on distance, depth, and what is in the way.
- Septic tank abandonment, if you are converting from septic: pump-out, then crush and fill or remove per local code.
- Restoration of the lawn, walkway, or driveway disturbed by the work.
The construction items depend on your property and are quoted after a site visit. See our septic to sewer conversion page for the full breakdown and a fee estimator.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes, if you are converting from a septic system or cesspool. CCMUA offers an installment plan for these properties. You apply for it at the time you submit the connection application, so decide before the paperwork goes in. The plan covers the CCMUA fee only, not the municipal fee or construction costs.
When the fee can be waived
CCMUA's guidelines allow no connection fee when a municipality connects a large section of its sewer system serving existing homes that were previously on septic. Runnemede's 2025 agreement is one example.
This applies to town-led projects, not to individual homeowners connecting on their own. If your street is being converted as part of a municipal project, ask your town whether a waiver applies before you pay anything.
Steps to get connected
- Get municipal approval from your town.
- Obtain the CCMUA Sewer Connection Permit. It is required before any physical connection is made.
- Pay the CCMUA fee, or apply for the installment plan if eligible, plus any municipal fee.
- Complete construction: excavate, install the sewer lateral, and make the connection.
- Pass inspection, then abandon the septic tank (if any) and restore the site.
Before you pay
A few quick checks can save money and delays:
- Confirm the current per-EDU rate with CCMUA, especially near the spring reset.
- Confirm your EDU count if your property is not a single-family home.
- Ask your town for its municipal connection fee and any local deadline to connect.
- Ask whether your street is part of a town-led conversion that may qualify for a fee waiver.
- If you are converting from septic, decide whether to apply for the installment plan before you submit the application.
