The 150-foot rule

Sicklerville is part of Winslow Township, and the township has a clear rule: properties within 150 feet of a municipal sanitary sewer line must connect, and must do so within 120 days of service becoming available. If a new main has gone in on or near your street, that clock may already be running.

There's an important exception. In some Pinelands-zoned districts, sewer connections are not required — and in some cases are not permitted at all. Parts of Winslow Township fall under Pinelands rules, so we check your property's zoning before we quote. There's no point pricing a conversion the township won't allow, and no reason to rush one that isn't required.

How connecting works in Winslow Township

Connecting in Sicklerville involves two agencies: Winslow Township's Department of Municipal Utilities, located at 125 South Route 73 in Braddock, and the Camden County MUA, which reviews and approves the connection. The order matters, and skipping a step delays everything after it:

  1. Submit the connection application to the Winslow Township Department of Municipal Utilities.
  2. Submit the application to the Camden County MUA (CCMUA).
  3. Receive CCMUA approval by mail.
  4. Obtain the Winslow Township construction permit.
  5. A registered plumber makes the connection.
  6. The township performs the plumbing inspection.
  7. Quarterly sewer billing begins.

What the township fee covers vs. what the dig costs

Winslow Township's connection fee is $3,998 plus a $5 application fee — $4,003 in total. That fee is paid to the township for the right to connect to the system. It does not cover any of the physical work on your property.

The construction side — excavating the trench, laying the lateral from the house to the main, the plumbing connection, abandoning the septic tank and restoring the yard — is a separate cost that depends on your lot: how far the house sits from the main, how deep the connection is, and what the line has to pass under. We quote that work in writing after seeing the property. For more on how county and township fees fit together, see our guide below.

Sandy soil and trench safety

Much of Sicklerville sits on sandy ground. Sand digs quickly, but it doesn't hold a vertical wall — a sewer trench can slough in without warning once it gets deep. We slope or shore trench walls as the depth requires, keep spoil piles back from the edge, and keep people out of unprotected trenches.

Where groundwater sits close to the surface, a trench can also take on water, which makes it hard to bed pipe at a steady fall. We plan for dewatering where conditions call for it rather than discovering it halfway through the job.

Abandoning the septic tank

Once the house drains to the sewer, the old tank must be taken out of service. It's pumped by a licensed hauler, then removed or broken and filled in place with clean material so it can't collapse later. The disposal field is normally left in the ground.

We coordinate the pumping and do the abandonment ourselves as part of the same job, so you aren't juggling a second contractor. Confirm with Winslow Township what documentation it needs for the closed tank, and we'll make sure it's provided.

Restoration

A sewer trench crosses lawn and often a walk or driveway. We backfill and compact in lifts so the trench line doesn't settle, regrade for drainage, and finish with topsoil and seed. Where the line crosses concrete, our own crew replaces the cut section.

When the inspection passes and the quarterly sewer bill starts, the yard should already look finished.

Backup now? Call first

If sewage is backing up today, the problem is usually the pipe to the tank or a full tank — that needs attention before any conversion planning.
