Concrete Driveways & Patios in Berlin, NJ
Berlin Borough and Berlin Township, Camden County. Family-owned, licensed and insured, and self-performing every stage of the work since 1979.
We replace concrete driveways, aprons, patios, walks and steps in Berlin Borough and Berlin Township, Camden County. Sandy soil here needs proper compaction to support a slab, and every surface needs pitch to shed water. We break out the old concrete, build a compacted stone base, and pour reinforced, jointed slabs — with approvals filed in the right municipality.

Starting with a walk-through
Before any work starts, we walk the property with you, look at how the existing concrete failed and how water moves across the lot, and agree on layout, finish and where the new slab will drain. You'll know the scope and the order of work before the first piece of old concrete comes out, and we'll answer questions as the job goes.
Borough or township
"Berlin" covers two municipalities, Berlin Borough and Berlin Township, each with its own approvals for work in the street. If your project includes an apron or sidewalk, the municipality you're actually in decides the requirements. Mailing addresses don't always make that clear, so we confirm it before scheduling.
Sandy ground needs compaction
Much of Berlin sits on sandy soils of the inner coastal plain. Sand drains well, which is good for concrete, but loose sand settles under a slab if it isn't compacted in layers. A driveway poured on poorly compacted sand sinks unevenly and cracks. We excavate to firm ground, install stone, and compact in lifts so the slab is supported evenly.
Why concrete fails
When we look at a failing driveway or patio, we're looking for the cause:
- Settlement from loose or poorly compacted soil
- Missing stone base under the slab
- Salt and freeze-thaw damage at the surface
- Cracks running at random where joints were missing
- Pitch that holds water or sends it toward the house
Repair or replace
One damaged section on a sound slab can sometimes be replaced alone. When settlement or a missing base affects the whole driveway, full replacement is the honest recommendation. We'll explain what we find.
Removal
Old concrete is broken out, loaded and hauled away, with lawns, beds and neighboring surfaces protected along the access route.
Pitch built into every slab
Forms are set to a planned fall that carries water away from the garage and house toward the street, the yard or a drain. Standing water on concrete freezes and damages the surface; water running at the house becomes a basement problem.
Reinforcement and joints
Every slab is reinforced, jointed at proper spacing so cracks form in straight lines inside the joints, and isolated from the house, garage and walks so each moves independently.
Patios
A patio that has settled toward the house sends rain at the foundation. New patios are pitched away on a compacted base; where water still gathers at the edge, a drain can take it away.
Walks and steps
Settled walks and front steps are trip hazards. We rebuild them on a compacted base, with consistent risers and a slip-resistant finish, and match the driveway.
Widening and parking pads
Adding width or a parking pad needs the same compacted base as the main slab. If the existing driveway is aging, replacing it all at once gives matched color, finish and joints.
Aprons and the street
The apron takes the hardest wear from plows, salt and turning cars. We build it to meet the road cleanly and file for approval with the borough or township, whichever applies.
Utilities first
Water in Berlin comes from the Borough of Berlin Water Department, and sewer from the borough or township depending on where you live. We have every utility marked before breaking concrete. If a line under the driveway needs replacing, doing it while the slab is out avoids cutting new concrete later.
Season and aftercare
Most flatwork is scheduled spring through fall, away from freezing nights and heavy rain. We'll tell you when the new slab can take foot traffic and a car, and recommend keeping harsh deicers off it through its first winter.
Cleanup
When the work is done, forms are removed, edges are backfilled and graded, the lawn is left ready for seed, and all debris is hauled away. The street is swept before we leave.
How long the job takes
Most residential projects follow the same rhythm: break out and haul away the old concrete, excavate and compact the base, set forms and reinforcement, then pour and finish. Weather can shift the schedule, and we'll keep you posted. While the slab cures, we'll tell you where to park and when it's ready for use.
Finishes
Broom finish gives traction on drives, walks and steps and is the right choice for most surfaces. For patios we'll talk through finish options and how each holds up to South Jersey winters. Clean tooled edges and a sensible joint layout do a lot to make plain concrete look finished.
Planning with neighbors
On closely spaced streets, we give you the schedule ahead of time so you can let neighbors know, keep shared access clear where possible, and clean up the street daily.
What a finished job looks like
A finished slab should be evenly finished and jointed, with clean edges and no standing water. After the first heavy rain, water should run off the surface and away from the house. If something doesn't perform as described, we come back and look at it with you.
