Excavation & Grading in Haddonfield, NJ
Borough of Haddonfield, Camden County. Family-owned, licensed and insured, and self-performing every stage of the work since 1979.
We excavate in the Borough of Haddonfield, where the challenge is rarely the soil and almost always what sits on it: narrow side yards, shared driveways, original brick and slate walks, stone foundations and a mature tree canopy. We dig for sewer laterals, additions, drainage and pool removals with compact equipment and restore what we disturb.

Excavation in an old borough
Haddonfield has one of the oldest housing stocks we work in — Victorians, colonial revivals and many pre-1930 homes. The ground beneath them is relatively firm compared with the flatter townships to the east, and the land falls toward the Cooper River corridor. On paper, that's good digging ground.
In practice, every Haddonfield job is defined by access and restoration. A century of walks, walls, plantings and buried history sits on top of the soil, and getting to the work without wrecking it is most of the craft.
Narrow side yards and shared driveways
Side yards here are often just wide enough to walk through, and driveways are frequently single-width or shared with a neighbor. Full-size machines don't fit. We bring compact excavators and hand tools, plan the haul route before we start, and schedule around a neighbor's need to use a shared drive.
Sometimes the right answer is more hand digging and less machine. It's slower, but it keeps the job inside the space the property actually has.
Under brick and slate
Many walks in the borough are original brick or slate. When a trench has to cross one, we lift the pavers or stones, set them aside in order, and relay them on a compacted base afterward rather than breaking through and patching with concrete. Pieces that break get matched as closely as possible.
Roots are the real underground factor
The borough's street-tree canopy is the main reason we're digging in the first place: roots find old clay sewer joints, the pipe crushes, and the first sign is a slow drain. The same roots make excavation harder. We locate major roots before cutting, hand-dig around them, and avoid driving equipment across root zones we don't need to cross.
Digging beside old foundations
Stone and brick foundations from this era often sit on shallow, unreinforced footings. Excavating next to one — for a lateral, a waterproofing job or an addition — has to avoid undermining the wall. We dig in short sections along the foundation, never leave a long stretch open below footing level, and backfill promptly.
Additions and kitchen expansions
Rear additions and kitchen bump-outs are common here. New footings go down to undisturbed bearing soil and are inspected before concrete. Where the new foundation meets the old house, we take care not to disturb the existing footing, and backfill against both walls in compacted lifts.
A hundred years of buried surprises
Old properties hide old things: abandoned clay and cast-iron lines, former cisterns, brick footings from outbuildings, coal ash and building debris used as fill. We expect them, remove what's in the way, and tell you what we find before it changes the plan.
What we excavate for
Common Haddonfield jobs include:
- Sewer lateral replacement under walks and root-heavy front yards
- Footings for rear additions and kitchen expansions
- Excavation along foundation walls for drainage and waterproofing
- Pool removal on tight rear lots
- Base excavation for walks, steps and driveways
Basement water and grading
Many old basements were never meant to stay dry. Because the land slopes toward the Cooper River, surface water has somewhere to go once it's directed there. Regrading around the foundation, extending downspouts and excavating for footing or curtain drains are often what keeps water out.
Pool removal on tight lots
Removing a backyard pool when the only access is a narrow side yard takes planning: smaller equipment, more trips, and careful protection of the route. The fill still goes in compacted layers so the yard doesn't settle.
Concrete and flatwork prep
When we replace a walk, steps or driveway, we excavate below the old base and soft material and build a compacted stone base, with an eye to matching the established look of the street.
Borough utilities
New Jersey American Water has owned the borough's sewer system since 2015 and also supplies water; wastewater is treated by the Camden County MUA. We coordinate lateral connections and inspections with the utility as part of the job.
Working in the right-of-way
Lateral work often reaches the sidewalk or street. Openings in the public right-of-way need borough approval and are restored to the borough's standard, which we handle.
Considerate neighbors
With houses this close together, a dig affects more than one household. We keep shared drives passable whenever possible, keep spoil contained, and clean up daily.
Emergency sewer work
If a sewer lateral fails and backs up, our crews respond around the clock.
