Excavation & Grading in Medford

We excavate and grade properties across Medford Township, where large wooded lots, sandy Pinelands-edge soil and a high seasonal water table in places shape every job. We dig for additions, garages, outbuildings, long driveways, pool removals and utility lines, support sandy trench walls, plan around wet ground and wetland buffers, and backfill in compacted lifts.

Large lots change the job

Medford is a large-lot township. Many homes from the 1970s and 80s sit on one- to three-acre wooded parcels, houses near the Medford Lakes periphery started small and grew, and newer custom homes sit on cleared land. Long drives, detached garages and outbuildings are common.

Space makes access easier than in older boroughs, but distance and trees add their own challenges: long haul routes, clearing equipment paths without damaging the woods, and moving material a long way across the property.

Sand that digs easily and won't stand

Much of the township has sandy soil that drains quickly. It's easy to dig and hard to keep in place. Even a moderately deep trench in clean sand can slough in without warning, so we slope, bench or shore walls for the actual depth and keep spoil piles well back from the edge.

Sand also compacts well when placed in thin, moistened lifts, which makes it good backfill if handled properly.

Clay and hardpan that perch water

The sand is interrupted in places by clay and hardpan layers. Water sinks through the sand, hits the hard layer and sits there, so a lot that looks well drained can have a wet zone a few feet down. We note where those layers occur because they affect footing depth, basement dampness and whether a drainage fix can rely on infiltration.

High water table in parts of town

In parts of Medford, the seasonal high water table is close to the surface. Excavations below a few feet can fill with water, which matters for basements, footings, pool removals and anything near a wetland margin. We plan pumping before we start, schedule deeper digs for drier periods when possible, and make sure footings and pipe go into a firm, dewatered bottom.

Wetlands and buffers are real constraints

Near the streams and cedar swamps, wetlands and their buffer areas limit where and how you can dig. We look at where the work sits relative to those areas before scoping it, and if a project may need approvals, we raise that up front instead of finding out mid-job.

Working on septic and well properties

Many Medford homes use private septic systems and wells rather than public sewer and water, which serve only part of the township. On those lots, the underground work happens entirely on your own land. Before we dig, we locate the tank, distribution box, field and well line so equipment never crosses them; a drain field is easily damaged by the weight of a machine.

In sewered areas, Medford Township's Division of Municipal Utilities handles sewer, and we coordinate connections with the township.

What we excavate for

Medford projects regularly include:

  • Footings for additions, detached garages and outbuildings
  • Excavation and base for long gravel or concrete drives
  • Pool removal with compacted fill, including high-water sites
  • Trenching for water, sewer, electric and drain lines
  • Grading and clearing for new outdoor spaces

Additions over crawl spaces

Many additions here are built over crawl spaces. We excavate the perimeter footings below frost depth to undisturbed soil, keep the crawl space area graded so it doesn't collect water, and have footings inspected before concrete.

Long driveways

A driveway that runs hundreds of feet through woods needs a consistent base along its whole length. We strip organic soil and roots, set grades so water sheds off rather than running down the drive, and build a compacted stone base for gravel or concrete.

Pool removal on wet ground

Where the water table is high, an emptied pool shell can take on groundwater quickly. We plan pumping, remove or break the shell, and fill in compacted layers so the area stays stable.

Clearing with care

Wooded lots are part of what owners value here. We clear only what the work needs, route equipment to avoid major trees, and remove stumps and roots from structural areas so they don't rot and settle under a slab.

Permits and inspections

Structural excavation is inspected before concrete, and work near regulated areas may need approvals. We handle the paperwork for the work we perform.

Restoring the site

We backfill, fine-grade and spread topsoil, leaving the area ready for seed and pitched to drain.

Emergency sewer work

If a sewer line fails in a sewered part of town, our crews respond around the clock.
