Moorestown Township, Burlington County. Family-owned, licensed and insured, and self-performing every stage of the work since 1979.

Excavation & Grading in Moorestown

We handle excavation and grading across Moorestown Township, from pre-war homes off Main Street to large newer properties on the eastern side. Work here means long utility trenches, digging carefully around mature trees, grading estate lots with shared swales, and excavating for additions, pool removals and long driveways — always backfilled in compacted lifts.

A township with every age of house

Moorestown's range of building age shapes nearly every excavation we do here. Older homes near Main Street sit on stone or brick foundations with original clay laterals and decades of landscaping on top. Mid-century neighborhoods fill in behind them. Toward the east, large newer homes sit on multi-acre parcels with long driveways and their own drainage patterns.

Each of those calls for a different approach to access, depth and restoration, so we plan the dig around the property rather than around a standard method.

Long runs from house to street

On older and larger Moorestown properties, the run from the house to the street can be a hundred feet or more. That changes how a sewer lateral or water service is replaced. An open trench that long crosses lawn, beds, walks and often a driveway, so we weigh full excavation against shorter access pits and trenchless methods where the pipe allows it.

When open trenching is the right call, we set the pipe on a consistent grade over its full length — on a long run, small grade errors add up — and restore everything the trench crossed.

Digging around mature trees

Established neighborhoods have some of the heaviest tree canopy we work under. Those root systems crush old clay pipe and lift slabs, and they also limit where a machine can safely operate. Cutting a major root to make room for a trench can harm the tree, and running heavy equipment over the root zone compacts the soil it depends on.

We route trenches to avoid major roots where possible, hand-dig near them, and use ground protection mats so equipment doesn't compact the root zone on the way in.

Silty loam to clay

Ground in the township ranges from silty loam through clay. Silty soil is easy to dig but loses strength when wet and can slump into an open trench. Clay holds a wall better but drains poorly and is a poor choice for structural backfill. We judge the soil as we dig and import suitable fill where the native material won't compact.

Estate-lot drainage

Large parcels often have their own drainage character: a swale running across two properties, a low area collecting runoff from an adjacent field, or a long driveway channeling water toward the garage. Grading these lots is about understanding the whole slope, not just the area around the house.

We take elevations across the property, find the natural low path, and grade to send water along it to a proper outlet without moving the problem onto a neighbor.

Near the creek corridors

The land falls gently toward the Rancocas and the Delaware. Depth to water is generally manageable, but low areas near the creek corridors can hit water on deeper work. We plan dewatering there so footings and pipe go into a firm, dry base.

What we excavate for

Moorestown projects regularly include:

  • Footings for additions, garages and pool houses
  • Sewer lateral and water service trenching, including long runs
  • Pool removal with engineered or compacted backfill
  • Excavation and base for long private driveways
  • Grading and swale work on larger parcels

Additions on older homes

Adding onto a pre-war house means excavating beside a foundation that may be stone or brick with shallow footings. We dig carefully along the existing wall, avoid undermining it, and bring the new footings down to undisturbed soil for inspection before concrete. Old buried surprises — cisterns, abandoned pipes, former foundations — are common and handled as we find them.

Long private driveways

A long driveway on an estate lot is a substantial excavation project. We strip topsoil and soft material across the full length, establish grades so water sheds off the surface rather than running down it, and build a compacted stone base before the surface goes in.

Pool removal

Removing a pool on a larger property often comes with patios, fencing and equipment pads. We break out the shell, remove debris, fill in compacted layers and grade the area so it drains and won't settle later.

Working with the township utilities

Moorestown runs its own water department and its own sewer system and treatment plant, with some areas served by neighboring authorities. We confirm which system serves the property before trenching and coordinate connections and inspections with that utility.

Protecting what's on top

On mature properties, the landscape is often worth more than the dig itself. We agree on an access route before work begins, protect walks and beds along it, and stockpile soil on tarps rather than on the lawn.

Trench safety

Silty soil can slump without warning. Deeper trenches are sloped, benched or shored for the conditions, and spoil is kept back from the edge.

Permits and inspections

Structural excavation is inspected before concrete, and work in the public right-of-way needs township approval. We handle both.

Restoring the site

We backfill in compacted lifts, fine-grade, spread topsoil and leave the area ready to seed, with any walks or edging along the access route put back.

Excavation & Grading FAQ

Moorestown questions, answered.

Not always. Depending on the pipe, we may use access pits or trenchless methods. When open trenching is needed, we restore everything it crosses.

We route around major roots where possible, hand-dig near them and protect the root zone from equipment.

Yes. We survey the whole slope and grade to move water along its natural path to a proper outlet.

Yes, including stripping soft soil, setting grades and building a compacted stone base.
