Mount Laurel Township, Burlington County. Family-owned, licensed and insured, and self-performing every stage of the work since 1979.

Excavation & Grading in Mount Laurel

We provide excavation and grading for homes, townhome communities and commercial properties across Mount Laurel Township. Flat ground over clay-heavy subsoil, settled fill behind curbs on commercial pads, and shallow utility easements in townhome courts shape how we dig. We locate first, excavate to sound soil, and backfill in compacted lifts.

Residential, townhome and commercial

Mount Laurel covers the full spread, and our excavation work does too:

  • 1960s ranches and split-levels: additions, utility replacement, regrading
  • 1980s townhome courts: work inside shallow, crowded utility easements
  • Newer homes on engineered pads: pools, patios, outbuildings
  • Commercial sites along Routes 38 and 73: lot repairs, basin resets, utility work

Flat ground over clay

Much of the township is genuinely flat, with clay-heavy subsoil. Clay holds a trench wall better than sand, but it drains poorly, turns slick when wet, and shrinks and swells with moisture. Backfill made of excavated clay won't compact properly if it's wet, so we often import suitable fill for structural work and grading.

Wetter ground near the Rancocas tributaries

Toward the Rancocas Creek tributaries, the land gets lower and the seasonal water table can be shallow. Excavations there may need dewatering, and we plan for pumps and timing so footings and pipe go into a dry, firm trench.

Townhome easements

In the 1980s townhome courts, shared drives and shallow utility easements complicate every dig. Water, sewer, gas, electric and communications lines can run close together near the surface. We have public utilities marked, locate private lines, and hand-dig near crowded runs. Work is coordinated with the association and staged to keep residents' access.

Commercial pads and settled fill

Much of the commercial stock along Routes 38 and 73 is 1980s and 90s office and flex space. The recurring problem is parking lot sections built over poorly compacted fill, now settling around storm basins and behind curb lines. Fixing it means excavating the failed area down to sound material, replacing fill in compacted lifts, and resetting basins and curbs to grade before paving or concrete goes back.

We phase commercial excavation to keep businesses open and traffic moving.

Grading to move water

Homeowners here describe puddles that last days and sump pumps that never stop. On flat clay ground, water leaves only if the land is shaped to carry it. Regrading so the ground falls away from the house, toward a swale or legal outlet, is often the foundation of the fix.

Additions and footings

For additions, we excavate to undisturbed bearing soil, remove any loose fill or soft clay, and have the footing excavation inspected before concrete. Backfill around the new foundation goes in compacted lifts.

Utility trenching

Original laterals on the township's 1960s homes are reaching the end of their life. We excavate for repair and replacement, bed new pipe to grade and backfill properly. The Mount Laurel Township MUA serves most of the township.

Site prep for concrete

A driveway or patio is only as good as the excavation under it. We dig below soft soil and clay, install stone and compact it in lifts.

Pool excavation and removal

Removing an inground pool is mostly excavation and backfill. The shell comes out or is broken up, the hole is filled with suitable material in compacted lifts, and the area is graded to drain.

Trench safety

Deeper excavations are sloped, benched or shored to suit the soil and depth, and spoil is kept back from the edge. Clay can look stable and still fail when it gets wet.

Spoil management

Excavated clay is rarely good structural backfill. We reuse suitable soil for landscaping grades and haul away what won't compact, bringing in proper fill where it's needed.

Permits and inspection

Footings are inspected before concrete, and street or right-of-way work needs township approval. We coordinate the inspections for our scope.

Backfill in compacted lifts

Every trench and foundation excavation is backfilled in layers, each compacted, so the surface doesn't sink months later.

Planning a commercial dig

On commercial pads, we start by walking the lot with the owner or property manager to mark failed areas, storm basins and the traffic pattern. Work is then sequenced so entrances stay open, fire lanes stay clear, and tenants know which rows of parking close on which days. Excavated sections are coned and plated at the end of each shift.

Putting a townhome court back together

After work in a townhome court, shared lawns and common areas are regraded and topsoiled, curbs and walks we crossed are checked, and the association gets a clear note of what was done and where new lines run.

Older ranch lots

The township's 1960s ranches and split-levels sit on generous lots, which gives equipment room to work but also means long utility runs and decades of landscaping, patios and sheds layered over the original grade. Before excavating for an addition or a new line, we look for what earlier owners built over and plan the dig so it doesn't undermine an old patio or crush a forgotten drain line.

Emergency excavation

When a sewer line fails and the house is backing up, excavation can't wait. Our crews respond around the clock.
