Why Cherry Hill homeowners are getting letters

New Jersey requires every community water system to inventory the material of each service line and to replace lead lines and galvanized lines that require replacement. If your water company has flagged your address as lead, galvanized, or unknown, you may have received a notice. That letter is the most common reason Cherry Hill owners call us about their water line.

Much of Cherry Hill was built from the 1950s through the 1970s. Homes from the earlier part of that window are the ones most likely to have older galvanized services, and in some cases lead goosenecks or connectors near the main.

Two water companies, one township

Cherry Hill isn't served by a single water utility. Some addresses get water from New Jersey American Water and others from the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission. Each runs its own replacement program, its own scheduling and its own policy on who pays for the private side. Your bill tells you which one you have, and that's the first call to make.

Public side vs. private side

A service line has two parts. The utility owns the piece from the main to the curb stop. You own the piece from the curb stop into your house. We replace the private section, and we time our work with the utility so both halves are done together and the house isn't left with new pipe connected to old.

How we confirm what's buried

What you see at the basement wall only tells you about that last foot of pipe. To know what runs under the yard, we dig a small test pit near the curb stop and look. Lead is dull gray and soft; galvanized is gray, harder, and magnetic; copper scratches to a penny color.

Replacement methods

Where conditions allow, we pull new copper through the ground trenchlessly, with a pit at the curb and one at the foundation. When a trench makes more sense — around tree roots, existing utilities or a long run — we keep it narrow and set the topsoil aside for restoration.

  • Test pit at the curb stop
  • New copper service, trenchless where possible
  • New connection inside the foundation wall
  • Pressure check before backfill
  • Lawn, walk or driveway restoration

Driveways in the way

Many Cherry Hill services run under the driveway. Trenchless pulling often avoids cutting it at all. If concrete has to be opened, we saw-cut a clean patch and replace it.

Doing the sewer at the same time

Houses with original water lines often have original clay sewer laterals too. If the yard is already open, it can be worth camera-inspecting the sewer while we're there.

Permits and coordination

Service line replacement requires a permit from Cherry Hill Township and coordination with your water company. We file the permit, schedule inspections and line up the utility's work so the water is off only for the final connection.

Who pays

Cost responsibility for the private side depends on your water company's program. Ask them first. If they're covering it, let them. If the cost is yours, or you'd rather not wait for their schedule, we'll give you a free written estimate.

Emergency service

If a water or sewer line fails outright, our crews respond around the clock.
